What Is AAAA Flower? Cannabis Quality Grades Explained
You'll see flower rated AA, AAA, or AAAA — but what do those grades actually mean? Here's how cannabis quality grading works and why it matters.
The cannabis grading scale
Canadian cannabis is often graded on an informal letter scale that runs from A up to AAAA (spoken as "quad"). The more A’s, the higher the quality. It is not an official government rating, but it is a widely understood shorthand for how good a batch of flower is.
What determines a grade?
Several things go into a grade: the look and "bag appeal" of the buds, the frostiness of the trichomes, how carefully it was trimmed, the strength and richness of the aroma and terpenes, the potency, the quality of the cure, and whether it is clean of seeds and stems.
AAAA (Quad)
AAAA is top-shelf, premium flower — dense, frosty, aromatic, well-cured and usually hand-trimmed. This is the best of the best.
AAA
AAA is high-quality flower that looks, smells, and performs great. It is an excellent everyday option that balances quality and value.
AA and below
AA and lower grades are more budget-friendly and tend to have more variation in appearance and aroma. Still enjoyable — just a step down from the premium tiers.
