Cannabis Edibles: A Beginner’s Guide
New to edibles? They're easy to enjoy — but they work very differently from smoking. Here's what beginners should know before that first bite.
How edibles work
When you eat a cannabis edible, the THC is processed by your liver before it reaches you. That means edibles take longer to kick in than smoking or vaping, and the effect tends to feel stronger and last much longer.
How long do edibles take to kick in?
Most edibles take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to take full effect. The most common beginner mistake is taking more because "nothing is happening" — then feeling far too much an hour later. Be patient and wait it out.
Start low, go slow
This is the golden rule. Beginners often start with a low dose — many people begin around 2.5 to 5 mg of THC — and wait at least 2 hours before considering any more. You can always take more next time; you cannot take less once it is in.
Tips for a good experience
Have a snack beforehand, settle into a comfortable and familiar setting, avoid mixing with alcohol, and give yourself plenty of time with nowhere to be. Always store edibles safely and well out of reach of children and pets — they can look just like regular treats.
Types of edibles
